There is no public fixed-position ranking system you can optimize like a traditional keyword position. Focus on crawlability, relevance, trustworthy information, entity clarity, third-party corroboration and repeated visibility testing.
“Rank in ChatGPT” is useful shorthand — but technically messy
People naturally use the word rank because they are used to search engines. AI answers are assembled differently: a response can cite several sources, mention brands without linking them, retrieve fresh pages, use product data, or produce a different shortlist for slightly different wording. A more useful objective is recommendation share and citation visibility across a controlled prompt set.
Step 1: verify inclusion prerequisites
Start with pages that are public, indexable and accessible. OpenAI specifically documents OAI-SearchBot for search discovery. Check robots.txt, firewall rules and any bot-management service. Keep important facts in HTML that can be retrieved reliably rather than hiding every key detail behind client-side interactions.
Step 2: improve query-to-page relevance
Map commercial questions to strong pages. If buyers ask for “best X for Y,” your site should explain who the product is for, what problem it solves, important constraints, alternatives, evidence and decision criteria. Thin category pages and slogans provide little material for a system to use.
Step 3: reduce entity ambiguity
Use the same brand naming and core facts across your site and credible external profiles. Maintain a clear About page, product/service pages, contact information and contextual internal links. Structured data can reinforce this consistency when it matches visible content.
Step 4: earn evidence, not just backlinks
Classic backlinks can matter, but AI visibility discussions increasingly focus on mentions and the context around them. Reviews, expert references, integrations, directories, communities and third-party comparisons can help establish what a brand is associated with.
Step 5: track a prompt portfolio
Build 20–50 prompts grouped by buying intent. Run them on a schedule. Record brand inclusion, competitors, cited URLs, answer position when meaningful, and referral/conversion data. This gives you something operational to improve.
Keep classic SEO in the plan
Google explicitly says the fundamentals of successful search content continue into its AI experiences. AI discovery is additive. Do not abandon normal indexing, organic search, conversion optimization or high-quality content in pursuit of a new acronym.
