An AI-friendly site is first a well-built public website: accessible to legitimate crawlers, clear in its HTML, consistent about entities and offerings, rich in useful facts, and measurable. Avoid adding experimental files or markup without understanding what they do.
1–3: Crawl, index, render
Allow legitimate search crawlers where appropriate; remove accidental noindex directives; confirm important content appears in the rendered HTML.
4–6: Canonicals, redirects, status codes
Use one canonical URL per page, avoid redirect chains, and fix important 4xx/5xx pages. Technical ambiguity reduces reliable retrieval.
7–9: Semantic structure, internal links, accessibility
Use descriptive headings, meaningful link text and accessible controls. A logical document structure benefits humans, crawlers and emerging agents.
10–12: Entity facts, structured data, freshness
Keep organization/product facts consistent, use structured data that matches visible content, and update pages where dates or offers matter.
13–15: Evidence, measurement, agent actions
Publish source-worthy evidence, track AI referrals and make key actions such as forms or product selection understandable and robust. Agent readiness is still evolving, so test rather than assume.
What about llms.txt?
Treat experimental conventions carefully. An llms.txt file is not a substitute for crawlability, useful content or standard search infrastructure. Do not make it the centerpiece of your strategy unless a platform you care about documents a concrete use for it.
