You cannot command a citation. Increase the chance of being useful as a source by allowing search crawling, publishing specific and verifiable information, structuring pages clearly, keeping facts current and creating original information that adds value beyond generic summaries.
Citation is different from recommendation
A page can be cited as evidence without the business being recommended. Likewise, a brand can be mentioned based on third-party sources. Decide which outcome matters for each page.
Allow the search crawler
OpenAI explicitly recommends not blocking OAI-SearchBot when publishers want their content discoverable and usable in snippets. Verify both robots rules and infrastructure-level bot blocking.
Answer one question extremely well
Pages built around a coherent question are easier for users to evaluate and for retrieval systems to use. Put the direct answer near the top, then support it with nuance, data, examples and limitations.
Publish verifiable details
Dates, specifications, processes, prices when appropriate, original tests, screenshots, tables and references give a page more substance than generic claims. Keep changing information maintained.
Use clear source attribution
When you rely on third-party facts, link to authoritative sources. Distinguish your own observations from sourced information. This improves trust for readers and makes your reasoning auditable.
Do not manufacture “citation bait”
Mass-produced pages that restate other pages offer little information gain. Google warns that scaled AI content without added user value can violate spam policies. Use AI as an assistant, not an excuse to publish commodity content.
