GEO and SEO overlap more than marketing headlines imply. SEO remains the foundation for crawlability, quality and discoverability; GEO adds emphasis on AI mentions, citations, retrieval contexts, entity clarity and prompt-based measurement.
Why the terminology is confusing
The industry uses GEO, AEO, LLMO, AI SEO and AI visibility for overlapping work. Ahrefs reported that search demand for “generative engine optimization” grew sharply through 2026, while the terminology itself remains unsettled.
What SEO still does
SEO helps pages become crawlable, indexable, relevant and useful in classic search. Technical architecture, content quality, links, structured data and user experience do not stop mattering because an answer is generated by AI.
What GEO adds
GEO adds questions such as: Is the brand mentioned in AI answers? Which sources are cited? What entities does the model associate with the brand? How often do competitors appear? Do AI referrals convert? These are new operational measurements, even when the underlying improvement work looks familiar.
Where the tactics overlap
Clear facts, strong content, reputable mentions, semantic page structure and accessible public information benefit both classic search and AI retrieval. Google itself advises that longstanding search guidance carries into AI experiences.
Where the tactics diverge
A classic rank tracker records a URL and position. AI visibility may require prompt portfolios, brand mention tracking, citation capture and response comparison. Ecommerce can also involve merchant/product data streams beyond normal page optimization.
A practical recommendation
Do not create separate SEO and GEO teams too early. Build one search visibility operating system with shared technical/content foundations and separate measurement views for classic search and AI discovery.
